"I can't stop my brain!"

Ever had a tough time getting your mind off a problem? Going back and forth between two ideas—like being on a see-saw, or going 'round and 'round about the same things—like being on a hamster wheel? Here are some tips for settling your mind so you can move on.

Baltimore Cognitive Behavioral Treatment: learning and education

Psychology? WAY too limited

This blog posting discusses why so many helping professionals are too limited in their approach. Being successful and happy go well beyond what we can learn from psychology alone.

My approach

I love to work with people who are serious about getting more of what they want out of life. We take a teaching-learning approach, similar in spirit to hiring a personal trainer at the gym, taking a college course, or hiring a financial planner.

Here are the skills I teach:

  • Developing strategies and tactics that work:
    • Setting reachable goals and managing them
    • Tracking your progress and making adjustments
    • Maintaining focus and motivation
    • Developing strong support networks
  • Reducing upsetting thoughts
  • Changing negative feelings to positive
  • Increasing flexibility
  • Addressing any issue that's preventing you from reaching your goals

And I'm not just a teacher, I'm a student as well. I'm furthering my learning with all skills that I teach to others. You can think of it this way: although we're both in the same boat, I have a bit more sailing experience.

"I get the general idea, but I could use more detail..."

I help people to get unstuck and to keep making progress until they meet their personal goals. Personal goals are most often something specific you want that's observable or measurable, such as dating more, finding a compatible partner, advancing your career, changing your career, or making more money. Sometimes personal goals can be more about feeling happier in your life; examples include wanting to be less shy and more social, wanting to be able to let go of workaholism or perfectionism, or wanting to be calmer while you're driving your car. As you can see, personal goals can be just about anything that you want to bring into being in your life.

Meetings with me last for one hour. I prefer to meet with people in my office, but I also enjoy phone and online video meetings (Skype). The most benefit comes not from our conversations, but when you take action and practice between meetings. Also, as mentioned on the first page of this website, I offer unlimited, brief phone and email coaching to provide reminders or tips right at the time during your week when you can most use it.

Clients working on one specific, manageable goal can expect to see significant progress between 6 and 9 months. Many of my clients find so much value in the way we work that they apply it to goal after goal, and they work with me for several years.

Many of my clients are Psychotherapy graduates who are looking for less analysis of the past and more help building a better future. Here are the technical terms for the emotion-management skills I teach: Cognitive Behavioral Treatment (CBT), Mindfulness, Positive Psychology, and Dialectical Behavioral Treatment (DBT). My CBT counseling is a much more sophisticated version of what you typically find with the few Counselors who use these methods; it goes way beyond handing you a worksheet, going through a self-help book with you, or tediously changing every negative thought to a blandly positive one.

I invite you to come on into my office, have a relaxing cup of tea or coffee, and let's talk further about how my Life Coaching can help you to achieve the level of success and happiness you've been looking for. Call 410-949-7888 or email me to schedule an appointment for your free half-hour consultation.
